Wax-Lyrical with Peach Fur
Hailing from the Gold Coast, Australia, Peach Fur make psychedelic pop intertwined with rock and reggae sensibilities, complementing their sun-kissed, exotic sound. Emerging in 2015 with their debut EP 'Pleasures and Necessities', Peach Fur have gone on to release a full length album with 'Doreen Drive' in 2018, followed by their most recent body of work, 'Awake' EP released back in March of 2020. From The Cat Empire to INXS, discover the records in Peach Fur's collection which have brought influence to their songwriting and recording, and ultimately moulded their music.
- (DH): First off, can you tell me about an album which first pricked your interest and made you want to start playing music?
- (DENNY): 'Ooo, it'd have to either be 'Californication' by Red Hot or 'Innerspeaker' by Tame Impala. Both have had an immense impact on me wanting to play guitar and be in a band.'
- Your 2015 EP 'Pleasures and Necessities' blends elements of indie, surf and psychedelia, with reggae coming through in songs like the title track and 'Days Go By'. Were you listening to any records at the time that may have brought this reggae influence out within your music?
- 'Yeah definitely, I would have to say Cat Empire, Bob Marley and the Wailers and of course Sticky Fingers were all inspiration to the reggae/ska fusion on our first EP.'
- As a band coming out of the Gold Coast, Australia, are there any Aus albums old or new that instantly stand out to you and that you find yourself constantly referring back to when writing new material?
- 'There's plenty of outstanding old and new Aussie albums that continue to inspire us everyday but I'd say there are none that we keep referring back to every time we write (worldwide too). Our style is constantly changing by genre bending all of our favourite flavours so it's not like there is the one or two references that really stand out. Just to name a few, here are some of the Aus records that we've been influenced by production and songwriting wise:
-Learn to Exist- The Jungle Giants
-Kick- INXS
-Blue Sky Mining- Midnight Oil
-Land of Pleasure- Sticky Fingers
-The Cat Empire (self-titled)
-Paper Mache Dream Balloon- King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard'
- Which record or records would you say you look toward for lyrical inspiration?
- 'Anything by Arctic Monkeys. Pure Class.'
- Cover art is obviously a medium besides the music that you pay attention to , your 2018 album 'Doreen Drive' as well as singles 'Does It Really Matter?' and 'Aliens' adopting abstract and psychedelic imagery. Are there any albums in particular who's cover art you look to when making your own?
- 'No there isn't anyone in particular. I think if there was, we wouldn't be very original. King Gizzard make really cool artwork consistently though!'
- You put out your most recent body of work, 'Awake' EP back in March 2020. Who and what were you listening to back when you wrote and recorded these songs that may have fed through onto the EP?
- 'I can't quite remember haha, the EP took us over ten months to record, so it's been a while since the time of the songs' conception. But if I was to take a guess, I'd say probably either POND or Yellow Days.'
- And finally, your desert island record?
- 'Farkkk hard choice. Probably 'Moonflower' by Santana because of how different each song is. I mean, you'd get pretty bored listening to an album with the same BPM every time, the songs would start to lose their magic. It is quite a tropical record also!'
